The Market House restaurant is updating to iPhones for their servers to use. This will help decrease the amount of mistakes made between the servers and the cooks. The iPhones come equipped with pictures and specific questions to ask for different meal options.

When hungry patrons visit The Market House at Jackson Square when it opens in Oak Ridge later this month, they’ll be greeted by servers with iPhones not notepads.

Gone are designated point of sale systems where servers go to punch in food and drink orders. Instead, servers will check out an iPhone and take orders in real time tableside.

The twenty-something owners, Dan Tremaine and Bo Shipley, say using this type of technology will prevent staff from misreading their own handwriting or forgetting to ask essential follow-up questions, like how a person wants their steak cooked.

Thirty students are seeking a supposed landlord named Carette. After paying dozens in deposit money, Carette disappeared. The Halifax police are investigating the fraud. Worse news for the students that not only lost money but still have no room to live in.

Halifax Regional Police are investigating a landlord after nearly a dozen complaints from students who say he took off with thousands of dollars in deposits.

Jeff Cook, a university student in Halifax, is one of several people who signed leases and paid deposits for a flat at 1740 Robie St.

“There’s a big group of us. We’re all supposed to be living in the same place,” he told CBC News on Wednesday.

“We can’t live with 30 people in there. That’s just not going to happen.”

The prospective renters found each other through a 19-year-old woman, who had seen pictures of the apartment online and went for a viewing.

She paid $2,200 in cash and signed a lease with a landlord named Cyrano Carette, in order to secure the apartment for September.

Daytona State College does not see off campus housing project as worth the schools funds etc. The builder of the apartments does not want an financial help from the University. All the builder requests is that the school somehow advertise the new complex. The project will cost 25 to 35 million dollars to complete.

Daytona State College plans to look into whether to build dorms on campus, but will not endorse an outside developer’s plans to build a complex north of the Volusia Mall.

At a retreat Friday, board members also agreed the college should not accept an offer to buy the naming rights of the News-Journal Center on Beach Street from Halifax Media because they said there would be no benefit to students.

Nursing was also a hot topic. The board has not ruled out considering some type of nursing bachelor degree but wants to get input from administrators at the University of Central Florida. The board doesn’t want to compete with UCF or Bethune-Cookman University, board members said.

President Carol Eaton gave the board updates on several topics, including plans by an outside developer to build a $25 million to $30 million student housing complex off Jimmy Ann Drive and Dunn Avenue.

Business is good for a large Texas law firm.  Most every area of the practice saw growth and profit.  Not surprisingly, bankruptcy lawyers experienced a healthy business year.

Cozen O’Connor had a strong financial showing in 2011, bringing in historic highs for the firm when it came to gross revenue, revenue per lawyer (RPL) and profits per equity partner (PPP), according to preliminary numbers from the firm.

Gross revenue jumped 6 percent from $277.5 million in 2010 to $294 million in 2011. Last year’s revenue was higher than in 2009, when the firm’s revenue soared 22 percent to nearly $291 million thanks to a contingency fee.

Cozen O’Connor equity partners made 8.3 percent more on average, with PPP increasing from $605,000 in 2010 to $655,000 in 2011. The firm’s RPL grew 6.4 percent from $550,000 to $585,000. Average compensation for all partners rose 14.6 percent from $445,000 to $510,000.

The firm saw its profit margin jump three percentage points to 33 percent as its net income spiked 15.7 percent to $96 million.

The firm was able to increase revenue and profits while keeping headcount and billable hours relatively static and increasing equity partners. CEO Tad Decker said rates were increased “a little bit” but are still very competitive. He said there was no large-scale contingency fee that would have affected 2011′s numbers as there has been in the past. The firm also didn’t spend the entire contingency fee from 2009, putting it toward expenses last year. He said the growth is consistent with the firm’s 6 to 10 percent revenue increases in years without contingency fees. Last December, it ceased operations and went into liquidation, leaving 5,400 active clients in the lurch.   Harris’ former clients, including those who won legal judgments against it, aren’t likely to see any money from the liquidation. (Another firm, Resolute Tax Services, has purchased access to JK Harris’ customer list; according to the privacy terms set by the bankruptcy court, customers must contact Resolute and agree to the transfer of their files, at which point Resolute says it will offer them a “credit of up to 50%” of the fees they paid JK Harris.)

In 2010, California Attorney General (now Governor) Jerry Brown  sued “Tax Lady” Roni Deutch, who also had a big presence on TV, claiming she “engaged in a scheme to swindle taxpayers” by overstating the ability of her firm to gain concessions from the IRS. Joan Wayman learned some difficult life lessons at a young age. They spurred her to a career in engineering — and now to her own real estate firm in Darien.

Dave Helleloid, co-owner and manager of the Mitchell Comfort Inn & Suites and the Days Inn, said the lifts cost about $2,000 apiece, although some report them costing far more than that.

The two motels Helleloid manages in Mitchell each have a pool and a spa, so adding the lifts will cost him around $8,000, he said. A spa is another term for a hot tub.
